The experts conducted an epidemiological survey of five areas in China including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shijiazhuang and Lhasa and found that the higher the magnesium and calcium levels in the urine, the higher the incidence of hypertension and stroke in the area low. In particular, Shanghainese, whose urinary magnesium content is as high as 135 mg a day, had an average systolic blood pressure of 115 mm Hg, while Lhasa, whose urinary magnesium content was only 71.6 mg a day, had systolic blood pressure as high as 149 mm Hg. This is because Shanghai people consume large quantities of fish, while Lhasa people do not eat fish because of religion.
