While the Stoncutters Bridge of Hong Kong, a 1 018 m span cable stayed bridge is to be put into construction soon, the problem of the extreme span length of cable stayed bridge has been raised once again within the bridge engineeing circles. Detailed discussion about several main topics concerned are made in this paper, and it is found that even for a span length up to 8 000 m such factors as the cable strength, decrease of the effective elastic modulus of the cable material, critical wind velocity of flutter of long span cable stayed bridge structure etc are not the obstructions while the axial force induced in the girder by the horizontal components of the cable forces is the first problem that will prevent the develope ment of span length and have to be overcome.
