Located in the Midwestern United States, Michigan is surrounded by four of the largest freshwater systems in the world (Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Superior and Lake Erie) and therefore Michigan is also known as the “Great Lakes State ”. There is a clear difference between the natural vegetation in southern Michigan and northern Michigan. Most of the vegetation in southern Michigan is deciduous broadleaf forest. In the north, there are peat moss swamps and coniferous forests. As the Great Lakes regulates the climate, the northern part of Michigan is cooler in summer with some more in the north
