Chondromodulin (ChM) is a family of new cartilage derived growth factor and a vascular endothelial cell growth inhibitor. Chondroitin is divided into ChM-I, ChM-II, ChM-III three, which ChM-I is the strongest family-specific effect of a cartilage-specific growth factor. ChM-I’s structure, regulation and control studies have been more in-depth, ChM-I expression decline is an important cause of cartilage ossification and degeneration, but the role of ChM-I in the process of cartilage growth there is still some controversy. ChM-I plays a very important role in the degeneration of cartilage end-plate and intervertebral disc. ChM-I receptors, receptor structure, physicochemical properties and growth factor-mediated intracellular signal transduction are still lacking.
