This thesis argues that Chinese ethnic identity can be divided into four categories: the first is to uphold the values of Chinese culture and traditional values and exclude the mainstream American society; the second category is to completely abandon the traditional Chinese culture, follow the values and standards of behavior of white people, The third type is “bicutural” (dual culture and dual language) that neither denies its own Chinese cultural background nor rejects mainstream American culture - it recognizes both its Chinese identity, Actively integrate into mainstream society and the fourth category, hanging between the two cultures, is the “marginal” that holds a negative attitude toward both cultures.
