Objective To investigate the changes of serum trace elements in elderly men. Methods The contents of trace elements Cu, Zn, Ca, Mg and P in serum of 55 years old and above were detected by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and compared with the young control group. Results (1) The content of serum copper increased and the content of zinc decreased in all aged groups, which was significantly different from that in young group (P <0.05). With increasing age Zn / Cu ratio decreased significantly. (2) The content of serum phosphorus increased and the ratio of Ca / P decreased significantly in each group (P <0.05). Serum calcium was significantly lower in the group over 80 years old. (3) The ratio of Zn / Cu was inversely correlated with age (r = 0.479, P <0.05), and the ratio of Ca / P was negatively correlated with age (r = 0.417, P <0.05). Conclusion There is a change in the trace elements network in the elderly men. The ratio of Zn / Cu to the ratio of Ca / P decreases with aging.
