Despite the weakness of the U.S. dollar order, world gold production in the free-market economy (referring to the capitalist countries) continues to grow, and has continued to increase in recent years. Production is estimated to increase by 4%, from 1,088 tons in 1983 to 1,135 tons in 1984. Countries with rapid increases in gold production include Canada, the United States, Brazil, and Australia. South Africa, the largest gold producing country, continues to provide about two-thirds of the world’s gold, but in 1984 South African gold production was relatively stable. Canada is currently setting off a search for gold. In 1984, production was expected to reach 78 tons, an increase of 10% from the 1983 figure of 71 tons and an increase of 20% from the 65 tons in 1982. In 1984, approximately 25 new primary gold mines were put into operation in the United States, increasing the production capacity by 14 tons. 1987 plans to have 31 more gold
