The earthquake is still a catastrophe. The 1971 San Fernando Earthquake in California killed 65 people and caused a loss of up to 500 million U.S. dollars. The 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China caused more than 240,000 deaths. Some parts of the world are still at risk from the ongoing moderate earthquake that will result in many deaths as a result of the lackluster local structures and inadequate emergency services. In other areas such as San Francisco, all residents seem willing to anticipate a ’big earthquake’ will happen soon. A few countries, especially Japan, have made every effort to reduce the impact of the Great Earthquake by developing a combination of earthquake-resistant buildings and effective education.
