Once went to London, Greene persuaded Garbo to visit Cecil Beaton, Garbo and Cecil had had an unpredictable romance. Their most serious and last quarrel was caused by the publication of Beaton’s diaries in 1972 and 1973, which contained many descriptions of Garbo’s private lives. In Garbo’s opinion, the publication of these diaries (and the hype in London newspapers) is an extremely serious act of betrayal. When Green asked him why he did this, Beaton said he had written to Gabriel and asked her if she was allowed to do so, but Garbo would not be able to do so for a year. He had called her in New York and Garbo hung him up when he heard that. Then he felt it was dishonest to erase the experience of her life because “the woman had a neurological illness.” The innocent yet deceitful Beaton thought Gabriel would listen to him explaining that when Garbo did not listen, he lost all prestige.
