Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) refers to the act of intentional injury to one’s own body not for suicide and is very common among adolescents. With the popularity of the Internet, more and more people use the Internet to obtain health knowledge. Studies have shown that adolescents and their guardians are more willing to search NSSI information online. Lewis et al investigated the characteristics of NSSI data on search engines on the web and evaluated the quality of their health-related data. The study used 92 NSSI-related search terms identified by Google Ad Words (sponsored links) to analyze 962 websites. The results showed that over the past 1 year NSSI searched more than 42 million times, of which health information-related websites were the most common types of websites.
