For the first time, I read Encounter, a journal reading room at the Columbia University Library in the late fifties, and I was drawn to the magazine mainly because of its culturally integrated content and reputable authorship of international reputations. I discovered that the publisher, the “Congress of Cultural Freedom,” turned out to be a peripheral organization of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) backed by at least its money.
