开车经过科罗拉多的连绵山脉前往中央城(central City),CD机播放着中央城歌剧院的录音,那是道格拉斯·穆尔(Douglas Moore)创作的《宝贝杜尔的故事》(The Ballad of Baby Doe)。我思潮起伏,怀念有史以来饰演宝贝杜尔最有名的女高音贝弗利·希尔斯(Beverly Sills,),惋惜她不久之前与世长辞。希尔斯也曾在中央城歌剧院的舞台上亮相,当年演出的角色却是阿依达(可能是最不符合她美妙嗓子的角色,她自此以后也再没有演过阿依达)。但是,令她在纽约一举成名的,恰好就是《宝贝杜尔》。这套歌剧是中央城歌剧院1956年的委约作品。总的来说,以上的事实印证了中央城歌剧院的长处:失败的例子慢慢减少,成功的例子威震四方。
