甜叶菊(Stevia rebaudiana BERTONI)是野生在南美洲巴拉圭、巴西国境线附近的菊科多年生草本植物.在当地一直用来作为一种甜茶的甜味料.它的干叶中含6—7%的甜味,相当于蔗糖300倍的优质甜味成分——甜叶菊糖甙(Stevioside,C_(36)H_(60)O_(18)是配糖体的一种).近年来,甜叶菊作为一种代替糖料的天然甜味资源,正在引起人们的注视.在日本,1970年由住田哲也从巴西引入种子到北海道农试站以来,农林省的各个研究机关,从发展旱地作物而引入新作物的观点出发,决定进行甜叶菊适应性的多点试验.笔者等人也承担了该试验的一个部分——冲绳地区的适应性试验.
