在本世纪七十年代,科学家们研制成一种玻璃纤维,它能有效地远距离传输光信号。这种玻璃纤维叫做光导纤维(简称光纤)。随着光纤技术的不断改进,光纤已对社会的各个领域产生广泛而深远的影响,成为“信息化社会”的重要支柱。由于光纤中传输的红外光波的振荡频率高达10~(14)赫兹。因此按理论计算,一根光纤可以传输一百亿路电话或一千万路电视,这是其它有线或无线通信远远不可比拟的。
