In Sydney, Australia, in 1986, the authors retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 39 HIV-infected patients who received all treatment in the same hospital. The average cost of medical treatment in hospitals was A$22,232, of which 95% was spent on hospitalization. . If, by 1991, the prediction of 3,000 AIDS patients in Australia would become a reality, this would mean at least an additional $58.5 million in medical costs. The study emphasizes that it is necessary for health care authorities to make advance arrangements to cope with this increased economic pressure for the treatment of AIDS.
