On August 27, 2004, the US FDA announced that Nellcor PuritanBennet is recalling its CapnoProbes, a carbon dioxide probe, nationwide. The device is similar to an electronic thermometer used by hospitals to determine the concentration of carbon dioxide in a patient’s body tissue. The probe is stored in a small metallic tube filled with salt solution and the small tube is sealed in a metal foil envelope labeled “not to be sterilized”. All Capno Probes are produced at the Nellcor facility in Tijuana, Mexico. These probes and their associated salt solutions contain Burkholderia Cepacia bacteria and other pathogenic microbial pathogens that cause severe infections in people with low resistance.
