My office is located at the McGraw-Hill buildings in Rockefeller Center, New York, USA. On a Friday night, I was working overtime, leaving the building to smoke a cigarette and going back into the building, past the guy who was wiping the marble floor, into the elevator and pressing the button on the 43rd floor. On the way up the elevator, I felt a wave of shaking, the light dark for a moment. A moment later, I realized that the elevator had stopped, so I rang the emergency bell. I’m displeased because my deadline is coming. At the time I was the publisher of BusinessWeek Magazine and had to get the magazine out on time. I wait for someone to respond, but no one. So I pressed the button again. I want to shout, but feel a bit embarrassed, so just keep ringing and wait.
