Of the letters that Darwin left behind, two letters were formerly believed to be written to Marx. One was written on October 1, 1873; in 1897, it was published in an essay by Edward Iwelling, the husband of the daughter of Marx, Elina. The other was written on October 13, 1880; in 1931, under the name of the Marx and Engels Institute, it was first published in Issue 1-2 of “Under the banner of Marxism.” For almost half a century, various hypotheses have been raised around the two Darwin letters that do not contain the names of the recipients, causing many misunderstandings.
