Stromal cell-derived factor-1 is a chemokine that is secreted by bone marrow stromal cells and is closely related to the hematopoietic function of bone marrow. This factor stimulates the proliferation of B cells in vitro and is also closely related to lymphoid and myeloid hematopoiesis in vivo. It is also the first chemokine that has been found to be capable of chemotactic lymphocytes, monocytes and CD34 + hematopoietic progenitors. Its receptor also plays an important synergistic role in the HIV infection of T cells. This article is a brief overview of the structure and function of this factor, and highlights its progress in hematopoietic physiology.
