英国学术的壤宝,H.G.韦尔斯(H.G.Wells)先生于本年八月十三日在伦敦本宅逝世。中国人对于这位学者,由于他许多著作,如世界史纲,生命之料学等之译为中支,是相当熟悉的。一般人都认为韦尔斯是个文学家,或者史学家,但作为一个科学家,他的贡献亦复是伟大的。尤其在中国这种情形下,我们很希望科学家间也有韦尔斯之类的人物,因为他在科学上的做法,是最最接近大众的。不用说,韦尔斯是受过科学教育的,他并不曾从事科学研究家的工作,但是他对于科学的贡献却比多数的职业科学家还要多。这个矛盾现象可以由两点来解说。第一点,韦尔斯的
H.G.Wells, a British academic lover, passed away in London on August 13 this year. The Chinese are quite familiar with this scholar because of many of his books, such as the history of the world and the material science of life, which are translated into the middle branch. Most people think Wells is a writer, or historian, but as a scientist, his contribution is great again. Especially in the case of China, we very much hope that there will be people like Wells among scientists because his scientific approach is the closest to the general public. Needless to say, Wells was educated by science. He did not work as a scientific scientist, but he contributed more to science than most professional scientists. This contradiction can be explained by two points. First, Wells’s
