The language is the carrier of the culture and the expression of the culture as well. Due to suchclose relationship between them two,it is unavoidable to involve English cultural knowledge when learning English languages. As the soul of English language, the accumulation of English culture, English idioms brightly reflect such relationship. This thesis aims to demonstrate the relationship between the language and the culture, and assist English learners to obtain a better understanding of English language by analyzing the cultural phenomena carried by English idioms.The thesis firstly offers a general conclusion of the relationship between the language and the culture,which is that the language comes from the culture and reflect the culture as well.Then it respectively analyzes English idioms in the two aspects mentioned above.It generalizes that English idioms have three main origins, which are the ancient Greek and Roman civilization,the Christianity and the civilian custom, and five major reflections of English culture in terms of the history, the religion, the custom, the English language itself and the western personal value. Finally it points out that English learners should pay attention to not only the language itself but also the culture carried by the language in order to achieve a satisfying result.
