Preface Mountain landscapes occupy about one-third of the earth’s land surface (Table 1). Relatively speaking, the mountainous population is extremely small because most of the world’s economic activities are concentrated on the coastal plains. In recent years, although the mountains have attracted the attention of many people, such as geologists and geomorphologists, human geographers have not paid enough attention to these areas. Soffer and Price pointed out that it is difficult to write mountain geography textbooks in the absence of up-to-date information.
