四、小调的特征:(一)感情抒发的隐寓性:小调在表达感情上,不象劳动号子、山歌那样单纯、直畅,它往往寓情于事、于景、于人物,运用这种隐寓的手法,曲折间接地表达出来。(二)形式创作的概括性:概括性是指小调有统一全曲的基本形象和感情基调,这是由于小调的叙事性而引发的。一旦叙事必然带来复杂的内容、多变的情节。然而民歌在歌词上不可能如小说,曲调上不可能如戏曲,它往往采用简便易记的方法,即歌词以四季、五更、十二月等时序串联多段;旋律在一个基本曲调基础上,根据各段歌词的不同而作局部的更易。(三)形式手法的修饰性:小调的歌唱场合和功用,要求它着意在歌词、曲调、唱法上进行修饰,在这一点上小调比较民歌的其它体裁都要突出。
