During the Second World War, the US Air Force combat crews were captured at a higher rate because of land-based aircraft being shot down or forced to land. After the war, the U.S. Air Force recognized the importance of field survival training. In 1948, the Air Force Strategic Commander, Admiral Cathy E. Rumey, chaired the meeting. For the first time, the issue of the field survival training program was formally discussed. Several Air Force field survival training schools were established to train and guide combat crew members.
