在自然条件下,水稻花粉的寿命是短暂的,一般成熟的花粉离开花药后,如果得不到萌发的条件,大约5—10分钟萌发力就大大降低了,经15分钟后,花粉的生活力几乎全部丧失。因此,在杂交水稻制种时,当两个亲本的花期、花时不遇,相差几天,甚至几小时,母本就得不到足够的花粉,从而导致结实率很低,产量不高。在生产实践中,为了解决这个问题,曾采用过父本分期播种移栽、母本剥苞、割叶或使用赤霉素等措施,收到了一定的效果,但仍未能从根本上解决问题。我们从1982年起开始研究水稻花粉的生活力及其贮藏条件,目的在于寻找能使花粉安全贮藏一年以上的贮藏条件及其技术,现将研究结果介绍如下:
