[US Department of Energy website reported on May 15, 2012] The U.S. Department of Energy announced on May 15, 2012 that the Department of Energy has entered into agreements with Energy Northwest, the Tennessee Basin Authority (TVA) and the U.S. Uranium Enrichment Corporation USEC) finalized a plan for the transfer and use of a number of highly enriched depleted uranium. The depleted uranium will be concentrated at the gas diffusion plant in Paducah in 2013 before being made into nuclear fuel for use by the Northwest Energy Company and the nuclear power plant of the Tennessee Basin Authority. The Tennessee Valley Authority will use this batch of uranium to produce tritium for nuclear weapons. The transfer is important for ensuring the national security of the United States and for implementing the Department of Energy’s environmental governance mission and for bringing business benefits to private partners and maintaining the Pudukka Gas Diffusion Plant up and running for another year.
