On the afternoon of February 14, Dr. Hong Tao, a 70-year-old researcher at the Institute of Virology, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, conducted a laboratory test on two specimens of dead lung tissue brought back from Guangzhou. The next day is the Lantern Festival on the 15th. Hong Tao did not rest for a continuous trip to the laboratory and the electron microscope room. He worked at night until 11 o’clock. On February 18, Hong Tao observed by electron microscopy that two of the autopsy lung specimens that died of the atypical pneumonia contained typical chlamydial inclusion bodies and chlamydia granules. “Chlamydia was found in five dead lung, liver, spleen and lymphoid tissues.” Hong Tao told China’s Newsweek that “more specimens from the Guangdong Laboratory, also got the same result. ”
