从宋朝起,就有描写戏剧演出的绘画出现,(当然更远一点,我们从世纪初的汉画像石刻中,也发现歌舞演东的画面,但这只是戏剧的滥觞)。至今山西南部寺庙,还保留下来《大行散乐丰都秀在此作场》的著名壁画,可以看出元代演戏的真实场面,艺术价值和考古价值都是极高的。清代有些民间画家,也画过孙菊仙、刘赶三的一些演剧场面小画,在市场发售,有的还在民间流行的木版年画中出现,广泛流传民间,但却未登“大雅之堂”。近四、五个年来,老画家关良一马当先,用毛笔、宣纸和中国画颜料,画过许多小幅以昆曲和京剧为题材的作品。关老是到日本学油画的,深受当时流行的印象派画风影响,他的戏剧小品画,也体现了印象画派的风格。由于他爱观剧,所以入木三分地用极其简练的笔调刻划出戏中人物的动作,风格十分拙稚天真,受到广大观众的爱好。十年动乱以后,画这一类戏剧小品画的,同时出现两位杰出的作家——韩羽和马得。
