Oilseed leaf samples collected from Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Solomon Islands and Nigeria were observed at the Rosenstock pilot station in the United Kingdom. The results of electron microscopy showed that only three virus-like particles were present in a sample of Papua New Guinea alone. Two of them were rod-shaped with lengths of 607 ± 30 and 788 ± 53 nm, respectively; the third was spherical with a diameter of 32 ± 8 nm. Short rod-shaped particles and spherical particles sometimes appear together, but no obvious association with them. Their occurrence is intermittent and most frequent when oil palm is dry at the end of the dry season. These particles have not yet been artificially transmitted. So far there is no report of oil palm virus.
