According to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), good groundwater conditions depend on no significant damage to terrestrial ecosystems recharged by groundwater (ie groundwater recharge wetlands). An eco-hydrogeological framework was developed to assess the risk of significant damage to terrestrial ecosystems in the United Kingdom and Ireland recharged by groundwater. This framework can be used by administrations implementing WFD as decision support systems that apply the WFD guidelines at the local to the regional level. The framework can be used to assess the risks associated with groundwater in a variety of wetlands. Seven different types of wetlands were identified and their potential pressures were estimated. In order to analyze the spatial consistency of the potential risks of various wetlands, a GIS framework was developed.
