高分子标样是标样的一个新门类。高聚物的分子量和分子量分布是两个极其重要的参数。而其测定,尤其是分子量分布的测定,若用经典法,时间太长,步骤繁琐。1964年凝胶渗透色谱(GPC)出现后情况大变。它是根据溶液中分子流体力学的体积大小来分离样品的。作为一个快速的分子量和分子量分布的测定方法,被认为是此项技术上的一个重大突破。这样,一个试样的分子量分布的测定时间就可由经典法的一个月而大大缩短为二十分钟。十几年来,凝胶渗透色谱(GPC)一直是一个非常活跃的研究课题,得到了很快的普及和发展。因之对标定色谱柱用的高分子的分子量标样的需求,也就日益增加。
