Objective To understand the awareness, attitudes and behavior of health workers in Xiamen City on smoking status and to provide a scientific basis for further targeted tobacco control strategies. Methods From April to May 2005, a cluster sampling method was used to carry out a self-administered questionnaire survey on the staffs of 10 third, second and first level hospitals and the CDC centers in Xiamen City. Results A total of 685 people were surveyed. The total smoking rate of health workers was 20%. The current smoking rate was 16.2%, male 26.8%, female 0.8%, and health workers 3.8%. Smoking health workers think the main reason for smoking is that they can relax themselves (42.4%) as a way to reduce stress, followed by social needs (38.2%) and smoking has become a habit (35.6%). Only 12.2% of physicians always asked the patient about the smoking status when they were presented to the patient. If the patient smokes, 54.3% of doctors often advise patients to quit or smoke less. Only 10.1% of health workers think the patient will follow the doctor’s advice on quitting smoking. Health workers quit smoking mainly from the mass media (39.4%) and medical books (26.9%), while professional training courses only accounted for 1.3%. Conclusions At present, the awareness, participation and initiative of health workers concerned with patient smoking and patient smoking should be strengthened. Health workers’ abstinence smoking skills training and special knowledge courses are lacking. Specific and systematic tobacco control training should be conducted.
