Background: Studies have shown that proinflammatory cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). Objective: To investigate the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-23 (IL-23) in the inflammatory mucosa of UC patients and its clinical significance. Methods: 42 cases of UC patients (mild, moderate and severe activity were 9 cases, 10 cases and 13 cases, 10 cases of remission) were taken endoscopic biopsy specimens of colorectal inflammation, the other 18 healthy volunteers Of colon mucosa as a normal control. The expression of IL-6 and IL-23 in mucosal cells was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results: The expression levels of IL-6 and IL-23 in UC patients with mild, moderate and severe active stage were significantly higher than those in remission stage (P <0.05), and were significantly higher than those in patients with remission and normal (P <0.05). Only IL-23 expression in remission patients was significantly higher than that in normal control group (P <0.05). There was no significant difference in IL-6 expression between normal control group and control group. Conclusion: IL-6 and IL-23 play an important role in the occurrence and development of UC. The mucosal expression of both can reflect the activity of UC.
