British researchers claim that mouse inner ear cells can be cultured in vitro, a finding that will bring a new revolution to auditory research. The discovery will help researchers pinpoint the gene segments that determine ear development and ease the use of medications to heal hearing loss. If this technology can be extended to human cells, it will make cochlear transplantation more successful, and even replace injured ear cells. Henry and colleagues at the University of Bristol have isolated the cells from the embryos’ cochlea. The mouse cochlea is the part of the inner ear responsible for perceiving the sound. The genetic basis of the mouse determines that its cell division can follow
