When it comes to mega-cities, Tokyo is sure to be mentioned. With a metropolitan population of 35 million, Tokyo is the undisputed leader of mega-cities, making it equally unmatched even for the closest competitors in Asia and the Americas. For Americans, the term “megalopolis” invariably leads to the image of a crowded slums in cities such as Mumbai or Sao Paulo, whose humble infrastructure and roads make it difficult for high-volume traffic. But in Tokyo, people travel almost unimpeded. Due to the expansion of the independent operation of the railway, it is difficult to accurately figure out how many people travel by train in the Greater Tokyo area, but it can be affirmed that this figure is comparable to the total population of many medium-sized mega-cities.
