The detrimental effects of hypoxia may impaired cardiovascular function. Most reports point out that hypoxia causes an increase in fetal arterial pressure. Little is known about whether hypoxia causes changes in the amount of fetal blood circulation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of acute hypoxia on fetal circulating blood volume. The authors inserted 14 singleton pregnant sheep into the carcass by a strictly sterile procedure under inhalation anesthesia (1-2% halothane, 40% oxygen and equal amount of nitrous oxide). The mean gestational age at 5 days to 6 days after operation was 133 ± 1 (SE). Divided into control period, hypoxia and recovery of 30 minutes each. Nitrogen and a small amount of carbon dioxide are added to the air inhaled by ewes, causing hypoxia. The latter keeps the fetus stable with carbon dioxide tension. The results showed that in the control period, the mean arterial oxygen tension (Po_2) was 22.3 ± 0.7 (SE) mmHg at 30 minutes
