Emperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty sent Zhang Qian as an ambassador from the Central Empire to the western regions in 139 BC. Zhang opened a continental trade route from China to the western countries as a result of his ten-year exploration into the unknown west. The legendary Silk Road prospered and contributed considerably to international exchanges in economy and culture. It was in the Tang Dynasty that various oceangoing routes began to link China with the rest of the world. The bulk goods shipped out from China were chinaware.
