烟台——威海现有的公路始建于1953年,技术标准为三四级,全长88公里,是烟台和威海间的唯一陆上通道。几十年来,经多次改造提高,基本上达到了二级路标准,但由于原路标准低,受所处地形的限制,仍有多处超出规定指标,并穿过村镇、县城多处。随着国民经济的发展,烟威公路的交通量迅速增长,出现交通拥挤阻塞现象,市区出口路段尤为严重,交通事故频繁,车辆效益极低,严重制约国民经济的发展,特别是威海升为地级市后,改造烟威公路的问题更为迫切。
