1964年9月,长沙市6000名初、高中毕业生下放到了湖南偏僻小县江永和零陵(今永州)等地,其中“黑五类子弟”占85%,且不乏学业优秀者。1965年新年刚过,江永县4名长沙知青不幸死亡,在知青中掀起了不小的波澜。一是男知青汪某,因公去广西,回场路上在突来的风雪中迷路冻死;二是两名刚满17岁的女知青在一场大火中丧生;三是男知青陈某身体虚弱又不甘落后,在坚持犁完一丘田后咳血不止,因得不到及时救护死亡。
