The Asahi Shimbun of Japan reported in February this year that Professor Suzuki Hiroshi of Tokyo University of Technology’s Department of Architecture had found out that the use of ice dregs instead of water to agitate concrete can improve the quality of cement. Concrete is agitated by cement, sand, gravel, and water. Water reacts with cement and solidifies. The general water consumption should be equivalent to 20 to 25 percent of the cement. However, the agitated cement is the same as the joint surface, the amount of water is too small, and it is not easy to knead evenly. Therefore, water is often added by as much as 40 to 60 percent in actual operations. Half of the water is superfluous, resulting in cement.
