When selecting cable sensor technology, the user must accept a major compromise that the technology does not allow for a centralized monitoring of tank leaks. The leak is indicated by a flashing light on the ground and must be observed by the operator checking in the tank farm. The benefit of this compromise is that there is no need for telecommunications cables to be connected to the central control room, and the total installation and follow-up costs are significantly lower than other application technologies; for the same investment, the system allows for more tanks to be monitored. The cable sensing system is easy to operate, and since each of two or more flash beacons in each tank is a stand-alone leak detection system, it also produces better redundancy .
