The regional tectonics and top mantle structure of Rio Grande Rift and its adjacent areas have been determined based on the Rayleigh wave velocity and phase velocity measurements and published seismic refrac- tions. These data clearly show that the crust beneath the Rio Grande Rift has become thinner. The Colorado Plateau is characterized by a crustal thickness of 45 km and a Sn velocity of 4.5 km / sec (Pn wave, 7.8 km / sec); the southern plains are characterized by a crustal thickness of 50 km. S wave velocity 4.6 km / sec km / sec). The Rio Grande Rift has a crustal thickness of 35 km and a Sn velocity of 4.4 km / sec (Pn wave, 7.7 km / sec).
