According to reports from the Military Technology and Defense News Websites, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has developed a new technology that improves armor resistance and penetration through the use of multiple layers of hard and soft materials called multiple armor. The new armor consists of different elastomers (elastomeric polymers) and hard materials such as aluminum alloys, ceramics or hard polymers. Elastomeric coatings have been found to significantly increase the ballistic resistance of the underlying steel substrate. The advantage of this combination is the impact of the transition from elastic rubber to metal or ceramic. Multi-armor performance is enhanced by at least 6 alternating layers, which can be attached to thicker panels or backplanes. According to NRL researchers, surface projectile rotation of projectile tissue pulls off the projectile and dissipates pressure waves, thereby improving its anti-penetration properties.
