这种真菌能使花生产生枯萎、根腐、茎腐(干腐、炭腐、灰茎腐),也可使花生叶片产生叶斑,还能使荚壳与种仁产生腐烂(黑荚),当病菌生长在种仁的子叶上时还能产生隐藏的腐烂。炭腐菌(M.phaseoli)已在世界各地多种寄主和土壤中发现,能为害蚕豆、向日葵、甘薯、甜瓜、番茄、玉米、高粱及许多杂草。现在研究范围已类似甘薯黑斑病。病菌对花生成株影响很小,有些地区荚果在土壤里开始成熟时受害较重。Bouriquet与Jaubert报导在Senegal地区花生种子因受该病为害减产34%。现已报导的有冈比亚、阿根廷、委内瑞拉、印度、以色列和美国花生上发现炭腐病。
