Musee des Beaux Arts
by W.H.Auden
About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters;how well,they understood
Its human position;how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
How,when the aged are reverently,passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth,there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen,skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner,some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer’s horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
In Breughel’s Icarus,for instance:how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster;the ploughman may
Have heard the splash,the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure;the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water;and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing,a boy falling out of the sky,
had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.
dull:1.lacking in alertness or speedy responsiveness
2.lacking in energy or enthusiasm
dreadful:causing fear or suffering
forsake:to leave somebody or something,especially when you have a responsibility to stay
failure:lack of success in doing or achieving sth;an act of not doing sth,especially sth that you are expected to do
(“In so far as poetry,or any of the arts,can be said to have an ulterior purpose,it is,by telling the truth,to disenchant and disintoxicate.”)
it takes place,
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
dreadful martyrdom must run its course可以说是杀猴儆鸡式的白色恐怖,dreadful不应该理解成“悲惨的”,must也不是“必须”,而是终归、必然、自然——不管怎样,总有结束的时候。Have heard the splash,the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure;
笔者认为failure指对呼救(cry)不予理睬(forsaken)—failure to respond to the cry(was of no importance for him.)—不去救人,无所谓的。
