Brazilian female architect, Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992), considered one of South America’s leading modern architects of the 20th century, has prolific and interesting qualities. Her landmark buildings, the Sao Paulo Museum of Art, Brazil (MASP, 1968), and the wildly styled SESC-Pompeia Factory (1977-1986) have received widespread attention in recent years and her Reputation has also been internationally recognized. In 1946, following her immigration to Brazil, her architectural practice evolved with the social and cultural realities of her second hometown. While continuing to use industrial materials, such as concrete and glass, she also used the prevailing materials and naturalistic forms to create a large, versatile, space-filled public. The Pompeo Art Center in Sao Paulo shows us an example of an urban renewal of the old factory, reflecting consideration of urban traditions, people-oriented, geographical focus and craftsmanship.
