“The International Olympic Committee has the honour of announcing that the Games of the 30th Olympiad in 2012 are awarded to the city of London!”
Six years ago, Jacques Rogge made that announcement. Now with one year to go, he’ll make another announcement, this time inviting all the world’s athletes to come to the Olympic Park in London’s East End. In a year’s time, the city’s population of 8 million residents will swell as athletes, journalists and tourists flock to see the selfproclaimed “greatest show on earth”. The man in charge of entertaining these hordes is Paul Deighton, Chief Executive of the London 2012 Organising Committee. A year ago, he said that he was worried that only 70% of the Olympics would be a success, not 100%. So what’s his assessment now? He’s been talking to our sports news reporter, Alex Capstick.
“It’s quite difficult to measure what what completely right looks like. I mean, what was it like of being in London in the summer of 2012 is an experience, well you know, for the athletes, for spectators, for all the people involved, and our ambition is to make that just an absolutely extraordinary experience, which stands out in people’s lives—things they want to tell their children and grandchildren about, because it was just great to be there: ‘Looked at all the things that happened, and I saw such and such, and I was part of that.’ You know, we saw a little of that at the royal wedding earlier this year. You know, people just wanted to be there or would like to have been there, because of the experience.”

“真的很难说到时候究竟全貌如何。我是说，2012年夏天的伦敦是什么样是一种体验，你知道，对于运动员、对于观众，对于所有相关的人，我们的目标是让那成为一种绝对超凡脱俗的体验，从人们的生命中脱颖而出——他们想要告诉自己的孩子和孙子的事情，因为光是身处在那里就很棒：‘看看所有发生的事情，而我看到这个和这个，我是其中的一部分。’你知道，我们在今年早前的皇室婚礼看到了一小部分。你知道，人们只想到那里或者希望能到那里，为了那种体验。”
