On July 2, 2003, the Korean Department of Statistics released a report on “2003 Women’s Livelihood Statistics” which contains statistics on the status, social status and economic activities of Korean women. The average number of children born to Korean women of childbearing age is 1.3, less than one-third as compared to 30 years ago. Moreover, the average age of first marriages of women in 2002 was 27 years, 3.6 years older than 23.4 years in 1985. Men also increased from 26.4 years in 1985 to 29.8 years, an increase of 3.4 years. The proportion of females married by the same age group was 14.3%. While the percentage of women married to young men younger than their own was 11.6%. According to the report, the reduction of children born to childbearing-age women in South Korea will bring about not too small changes in the labor force in all fields of social economy.
