Recent progress has been made in the mercury-free study of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a calcium carbide process that is highly concerned by international environmental organizations and ministries. Last week, Texas Shihua Chemical Company announced that its 2,000 to 5,000-ton pilot plant, a new technology for mercury-free catalytic reforming of vinyl chloride, has been successfully developed in cooperation with the Shanghai High-tech Research Institute and other units. The yield of vinyl chloride is up to 95% or more, and the experimental data are very good. According to Yang Zhijun, a representative of Dehua Shihua Project Team, since the trial operation of the pilot plant since the end of August this year, the key links such as reactor temperature control and dichloroethane recovery have been transformed and the pilot plant has now entered a stable operation phase. The new process of vinyl chloride yield of 95% or more, products
