Objective To determine the changes of plasma three kinds of neuropeptides in patients with lung cancer. Methods A total of 103 untreated patients with lung cancer underwent fasting blood sampling. Plasma substance P (SP), somatostatin (SS), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were all subjected to radioimmunoassay. Results The SP and SS in lung cancer patients were significantly higher than those in the normal control group, while VIP was significantly lower. There was no significant difference in SP, VIP and SS between the three types of lung cancer. There was a significant negative correlation between VIP and SP and SS. There was a significant positive correlation between SP and SS. There was no significant correlation between the three neuropeptides and CEA. Conclusion The determination of three neuropeptides is helpful for the diagnosis of lung cancer and the study of immune function, but it has no obvious value for the classification of lung cancer.
